Best Ways to Decorate a Nursery

Welcoming a new baby into your home is such a wonderful experience, but there is a lot of preparation to be done beforehand! Decorating the nursery is one of those tasks and perhaps one of the more fun jobs to do before your baby arrives, too. It’s a chance to have some fun with your interior design and get creative. When it’s finished, you can stand back and imagine your little bundle of joy spending the next few years of your life in this space. If you are stuck for ideas on how to decorate your nursery, however, here are a few ideas to keep in mind.

Calming Colours

A good rule of thumb is to choose calming tones to decorate your nursery in. While brighter colors can be fun, and even be used in a playroom, you want your child to feel soothed enough to fall asleep at naptime. If the color scheme is too vibrant, this might be over-stimulating to a child and make it harder for them to drift off to sleep. Great colors for a nursery include yellow, greens, lavender, blues, pinks, and creams.

Remember Storage

Another thing to keep in mind when you’re decorating your nursery is storage solutions. Babies and toddlers have a lot of toys to play with, not to mention clothes and other items that help you raise them as a parent. Try to incorporate as much smart storage into your nursery as possible to help keep it organized. Wall shelves or putting storage boxes under the crib are great solutions for smaller spaces. Quality dressers and closet space are also must-haves.

Changing Area

You should also create a dedicated changing area where you can keep all of your diapers, wipes, spare clothes, and a changing mat neatly together. It’s best located at the opposite end of the room to the crib, and make sure you have a bin next to your changing table, too! When your child is old enough to use the toilet, you can get rid of this area and make room for something else, such as a desk or reading corner.

Paint a Mural

While soothing colors are a good idea, painting a mural is a great option if you want to be more creative in your décor choices. You can choose to paint a scene from a cherished children’s story or some cute animals playing together? Perhaps a circus scene? Or some swashbuckling pirates and a tropical island? Whatever you would like to share with your child, a mural can be a lovely way to decorate their nursery. If you are welcoming a young foster child into your home, perhaps find out what their favorite book is or show and use this as the basis for your mural to help them feel more comfortable.
